House Judiciary Committee sent out 81 documents to individuals and entities requestiing information about Donald Trump
The House Judiciary Committee announced today that 81 letters and documents have been mailed to individuals and entities requesting information relating to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign’s role in the Stormy Daniels hush money scandal, the use of funds from his organization to pay for the inaugural, and any conflicting interests that Trump may have with governments who do business with the Trump Organization.
Among the 81 people and entities receiving requests for documents are Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Allen Weisselberg, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Eric Trump, Michael Cohen, former White House Counsel Don McGahn, American Media Inc, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Pecker, The White House, Trump Campaign, Trump Foundation, Trump Organization, and the Trump Transition team.
The House Judiciary Committee’s decision to send out the 81 letters and documents comes after Michael Cohen’s hearing before the House Oversight Committee.
During the hearing, Cohen provided checks and FedEx receipts as evidence that Trump knew about the $130,000 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Cohen also told the committee that Trump Organization Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Allen Weisselberg, who took a plea deal with federal prosecutors in exchange for information about Cohen’s business affairs and dealings with Trump, will have more information about the Stormy Daniel’s payments and Trump Organization’s business dealings.
When asked if there were any documents supporting his claims about Trump’s alleged shady business dealings, Cohen told the Committee they would be able to find those documents in some storage facilities that are owned by the Trump Organization.
Cohen has pleaded guilty to lying and will begin serving his three-year federal prison sentence on May 6, 2019.
The White House responded to the House Judiciary Committee’s request.
During the airing of CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, CNN’s Jim Acosta read the following statement from the White House, “The fact that Chairman Nadler would try to force the disclosure of private conversations that are protected by law proves he only wants to play politics.”
For his part, Trump has waved his hands at the House Democrats’ investigations.
While at CPAC, Trump told a crowd of his adoring Republican fans that the Democrats are trying to take him out with “bullshit.” He also sent out a tweet, accusing the Democrats of harassing him.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) told ABC’s “this week” host George Stephanopoulos that “It’s very clear that the president obstructed justice.”
Stephanopoulos asked Nadler if his opinion is evidence that the Democrats investigations amount to politics as usual.
Nadler responded, “We have to do the investigation to get all of this. We don’t have all of the evidence sorted out to do an impeachment.”
